Summary of the Tour de France

The tour de France is one of Europe's biggest and most well known cycling competition to date. It is a multiple stage bicycle race mainly held in France, while also occasionally passing through nearby countries. Like the other Grand Tours, it consists of 21 stages over a little more than 3 weeks. The tour was first held on the 1st of June 1903 and has been running annually since then. As well as having 21 stages it has four individual jerseys for each different classification or competition. The main jersey is the winner of the general classification's yellow jersey (le Maillot Jaune). The fastest young rider's white jersey is the second classification by time (le Maillot Blanc) the riders competing for this jersey are required to be under the age of 26. The sprint points classification is the green jersey (le Maillot Vert) and the Polkadot jersey goes the the winner of the mountain climbing classifications (le maillot à pois rouges).
